Duplicate forum posts

Hi all,

We’ve had multiple instances recently of readers creating forum posts for topics we’ve already covered in articles on the site, and for topics that are part of podcast episodes. We’d prefer to have all of the discussions/comments in one place obvious reasons. So please don’t create duplicate forum posts.

Thanks,

Paul

Sometimes a user wants to write their own "article" and put their own spin on it. Sometimes articles are Premium so the discussion will be more accessible in the forum. Just saying there are reasons for this behavior. You also get more exposure by writing your own "article" and you can't get downvoted as a bonus.

Nothing wrong with your wish. I just think a blog and a forum are two different things. One is centered around content creators. One is centered around users. I do believe an active forum can be a great asset to thurrott.com.

In reply to longhorn:

Understood, and obviously there are always exceptions. In some cases, though, it just creates two places for the same conversation.

In reply to paul-thurrott:

One problem though is that once an article moves off the front page, the likelihood of that discussion continuing goes down considerably. When a forum thread gets a new reply, it jumps to the top of the forum section and folks can see there is an active discussion going on. It would be nice if articles and their comments were somehow cross-linked as forum posts so comments appeared in both places and the discussion could continue once the article moves off the front page.

In reply to Chris_Kez:

that would be great actually. Each article could have a link to a forum post dedicated to it instead of having a discussion under the article. It is a bit frustrating that they move away and the discussion stops because nobody looks at the old posts anymore.

If it creates a conflict between premium posts and open forum, I would strongly suggest that forums become premium only, as it is pretty common
