in 7 minutes

When posting a comment the time is listed as being posted at some time in the future. For example “in 7 minutes” which I at first assumed was to allow for someone to curate the post. Obviously that is not the case. It appears that everyones comments are posted immediately matter what time is indicated. So what is the purpose of the “future” time stamp?

I've been seeing this for as long as the site has existed. A slightly educated guess is that the clock on whatever server holds the comments is out of sync.
