Used Gopher for the first time the other day

Hi all,

So yeah, I’m real late on this trend. But I thought it was interesting that this technology is still available if you wanted to use it badly enough.

When I first got on the Internet, it was circa 1994/95, and it was at the cusp of the emerging web as we *basically* know it today (obviously things have come a long way). I knew about Gopher back then, but I don’t think I ever tried it out. Or, maybe I did and I just don’t remember.

But as the screen shot below shows, it still exists! Hey, it’s fast, and something tells me not as strewn with ads everywhere.

Welcome to the Gopherspace. If you wanna get a real feel for oldschool internet, go over to and set up a shell account. You can use gopher, usenet, even lynx for web access over a fully text-based terminal.

    Party like it's 1989.

I wonder what might have been today, had the gopher protocol overseen the challenge from CERN and their HTTP protocol.

We'd be using Veronica rather than Adoogle.

Another thing, I wonder whether gopher is used for nefarious purposes, as it most likely isn't under the radar of law enforcement agencies ?
