Which retailer type do you start your tech buying?

I’m going to make a new headphone purchase soon and was curious where people generally go to make tech purchases. As I see it there are a couple of options:

1. Direct from manufacturer
2. Tech specific retailer (Best Buy, B&H, etc.)
3. General retailers (Amazon, Wal-mart, Target, etc.)
4. Resell markets (eBay, Craigslist, etc.)

For me I am considering getting the headphones from #3 General Retailer (Target) because it is a 10-minute drive from my home, pricing same as others, and I can get a hands-on before I buy.

What is your thinking all things considered (timing, returns, support, pricing) when you are looking to pick up a new piece of tech?
