File Explorer Advertising

9

First time I have seen Microsoft advertise in File Explorer.

“Get the best deal on your cloud storage with OneDrive”

“For $6.99 a month, ….”

Has anyone else seen this?  I have a screenshot. Maybe I have just never noticed before.

Yeah, this had surfaced on Brad Sams and Paul's twitter. Not sure what to feel about it. The most direct comparison I can make is how some Android OEMs "partner" with Google to give users of the phone additional space on Drive, which is preinstalled on Android regardless, it's similar nudging tactics which are anti-competitive IMO but they don't lock competitors out so they sort of get away with it.

    Yes, I tweeted about this.

It's an expansion of this: https://www.thurrott.com/windows/windows-10/85341/microsoft-cheapens-windows-10-ads

Not a big deal. It makes sense to communicate the ability to pay for more OneDrive cloud storage via the OneDrive file explorer. I know people like to live in some fantasy world that you can build businesses without marketing, but a great example of that failed strategy is Groove. Nobody uses it, nobody knows it exists and Microsoft doesn't talk about it or market it.

Don't worry. There's a lot more of this to come. Win10 will eventually turn into one large billboard. If you drip these things in very slowly though, MS hope people will get used to them and who knows, might even take up some of the offers.

This is how MS are monetising Windows 10. No matter what they say, Win10 benefits MS more than the user.
