Finally native printing on Surface Laptop 7 and Windows on ARM

If you read my previous review of the Surface Laptop 7 with Windows on ARM you know that I had various calls with Microsoft and chats with HP to get a OfficeJet Pro 8710/15 working. Well with the upgrade to 24H2 the new “protected print mode” will discover and correctly configure the IPP transport along with the Mopria universal driver. In the past neither the Microsoft discovery and install or the HP printer utility would install the right combination of drivers and settings. This forced me to setup a CUPS printer queue on a proxmox container.

The process to configure was easy. I removed old printer entries from my laptop. Went to “Printer & Scanners” in the settings. There was a “Windows protected print mode” setup option on the page. It discovered the printer just fine and, in a minute, there was a new printer on my laptop. Tested with a test page and it worked! The only thing I had to do was set the default print output to be double sided. Just a heads up many printers using Mopria will only print the other items scan and fax are not available. You can still use the scan, and fax features from the printer’s front panel.
