How to get rid of the donuts in Windows Search

Today it was donuts in my search bar. Yes Microsoft thought I needed to spend all day staring at donuts. It wouldn’t bother me so much if it wasn’t next ti the task bar which I look at all the time. And the fact that it changes every day makes it much more distracting. And it isn’t in the sleek new Windows 11, just the loser Windows 10. But now I know how to clean up my search bar. (An awesome thurrott forum member told me how to do it last week, but it wasn’t until today the donuts moved me from my apathy)

I cannot manage to link the Gizmodo article:

Here’s How to Turn Off Those Annoying Images In Your Windows Search Bar

I had to laugh when I read your post. I read it in my head like a journal entry. "Day 17: Now they’ve put donuts in my search bar… DONUTS!" lol.

I get it though, it’s super tacky and I’m not really sure why MS did this other than a way to make people saw "ew" and push them towards upgrading to Windows 11.

To get rid of it, just right-click anywhere on the Taskbar and go to Search > Uncheck "Show search highlights".

The cynic in me believes MSFT adds crap like this to measure how quickly 80% of users so afflicted disable the feature. That is, MSFT is using such features as a means to measure resistance to change, and this matters to MSFT because there’s a whole lotta change they have planned for Windows which damn few Windows users would welcome.
