Original Xbox Games Arrive on Xbox One

As promised, you can now access the first 13 original Xbox titles to be added to Xbox One Backward Compatibility.

“Compatibility is important to Xbox, to developers and their games, and our community,” Microsoft’s Bill Stillwell explains. “Preserving the art form of video games is part of our DNA, which is why Xbox One is the only console designed to play the best games of the past, present, and future. We’re excited to continue to deliver on our vision of compatibility by adding Original Xbox games to the existing Backward Compatible library.”

The 13 original Xbox games that are now available across all Xbox One consoles now all render with 1080p graphics and expanded color details. But because they are, in fact, the original games running in a Hyper-V-based emulator, and not remastered games running natively, some features no longer work.

“Offline multiplayer scenarios such as co-op and system-link are supported as they were originally,” Stillwell says. “There will also be no Achievements for Original Xbox games because this functionality was also not originally available.”

Come to daddy.

In the good news department, you can play them using the game disc if you still own that, or you can purchase the games digitally in the Microsoft Store.

And in related news, Microsoft has also revealed that Xbox 360 games will be enhanced for Xbox One X, and its 4K and HDR graphics capabilities, on November 7. Halo 3, Fallout 3, Oblivion, and the original Assassin’s Creed will all be enhanced, and more will come at a later date.

Are these less resource-intensive than current games? Assuming there were no insurmountable technical or licensing issues could Microsoft bring these to the desktop as a way to build out the lower end of the Games section within the Microsoft Store? By "lower end" I essentially mean stuff that could run okay on an integrated graphics card.

In reply to Chris_Kez:

They run in a Hyper-V emulator. The original Xbox was a PIII, so even with the upgrades to 1080, etc, I doubt they would be overly taxing on a modern machine. Licensing could be an issue for some.

There has been some speculation about MS bring X360 backwards compat to the PC – so that would open the door for OG Xbox as well. It'd be amazing to add a couple of hundred play anywhere titles that way.

I am a PC gamer, but seeing this makes me want to get an Xbox to play these old games. So many fond memories. It is super cool that Microsoft is taking the time to make this happen!

Anything to distract from the lack of new IP and anemic current library of stale Halo/GoW/Fotza rehashes. Zzz

Wish they were able to add achievements. They are quite addicting 🙂

Most of these games I ended up re-buying on PC through GOG, but it'd be nice to play on my big screen tv.

I was just last night playing the original Xbox game Burnout 3 with 3 friends. Why are the majority of new games so bad now? With the exception of just a few titles, almost everything i really enjoy playing are not from current generation consoles.

Rainbow Six : Las Vegas 1/2, Ghost Recon, Hitman Blood Money, PGR4, Burnout Revenge, Mashed, Blur. Even on the PC side i play Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, Age of Empires 2 , Counter Strike.

I'm just happy when the ability to play older games comes along, because something has gone seriously wrong with modern games. I'm convinced it hit its peak with the Xbox 360 which had a perfect blend of single player, local split screen/couch, local LAN (system link), and online play. Now its aimed too much at online play, Rainbow Six : Siege for example, multiplayer options are awful in what could have been an amazing game if the multiplayer side had all the options Rainbow Six : Las Vegas did.

But in fairness, I don't game much. I was hooked on Defense Grid 1/2 for a while, though. :-s

Will OG Xbox games purchased on the 360 be made available to player's libraries ? I purchased Crimson Skies on my 360 a while back, and would love for it to be immediately playable without re-buying it !

In reply to NicolasStouff:

Yup. Downloaded Crimson Skies and Pirates last night. It also works the other way. Games that are playable on 360 can be downloaded there, too. Bought and downloaded KotOR on 360 Monday, then downloaded on my Xbox One yesterday.

Ohh wow thats an awesome news I say, Infact every game player would be waiting for this news for long time. Even I have been waiting for a long time for the release of New Buy grand theft auto 5 ( https://www.instant-gaming.com/en/186-buy-key-grand-theft-auto-v/ ) on Xbox one Cross Play. Somehow I tried a few weeks ago of playing the game on my PC after purchasing the original CD keys from the official site of instant-gaming at discount price. But I would love if the game will arrive on the xbox or on the playstation, as the experience of playing the game on the consoles or on the PC is totally different and give a unique experience.
