Microsoft May Finally Announce the Next-Gen Elite Controller Next Month

Posted on July 18, 2018 by Mehedi Hassan in Games, Hardware, Xbox One with 10 Comments

Update: Microsoft has quietly updated the blog post, removing any mention of new hardware. Microsoft’s Major Nelson says this was an “error” and the company is only planning to reveal new Xbox bundles and accessories at the event. Original story follows below.

Microsoft is getting ready for Gamescom next month, and the firm is today revealing its plans for the conference. There will be a bunch of experiences available for fans, including the Xbox FanFest, Xbox Booth, Mixer Booth, and the Xbox gear shop.

But of course, Gamescom is more about new games and Microsoft will be showing off some of the upcoming Xbox titles at the conference. Interestingly, Microsoft could also reveal new Xbox hardware and accessories at the conference. In a blog post, the company said it will be revealing “all-new Xbox hardware and accessories” at the event, though we don’t know much about exactly what will be revealed. In another, similar blog post, Microsoft says it will unveil new Xbox One bundles, and there is a possibility we won’t get to see new hardware, with a possibility of the company simply just launching new bundles of the existing Xbox One consoles.

It’s highly unlikely we will get to see the next-gen Xbox One console Microsoft first teased at E3 earlier in the year, so that leaves us with the next-gen Elite controller. We have known about the new Xbox Elite controller for a while, and it seems like it could finally be launching at this year’s Gamescom. The new Elite controller includes Bluetooth support, 3 level trigger locks, 3 profile switchers, longer key travel for paddles, a new case that acts as a charger, and the ability to re-charge via USB-C. It’s a pretty exciting update for those who love the original Elite Controller.

Gamescom starts August 21st, and Microsoft will be live streaming the event live at 7:30 am PDT.

Just in time for Christmas. My money's on FH4 and Assassin's Creed: Oddessy bundles.

I hope the build quality is improved. My Elite controller has completely fallen apart due to the glue holding the seams of the rubber grips coming apart. In addition the left joystick drifts up now even when no pressure is applied. I've taken good care of the controller and the two defects are really discouraging due to the cost of the controller. I really dislike the stock Xbox One X controller that I have been using lately, so I will want the new one.

Great, non removable battery packs and planned obsolescence here we come.

If you want an elite, get one now.

I never met a controller I didn't hate. PC gaming all the way, until they add full keyboard/mouse support on the console.

I don't see how this invalidates the original story, a new Elite Controller could easily fall under "new accessories". "New hardware" would be if Microsoft announced Xbox Scarlet there, and we all know that was never in the cards.

I would rather there be Xbox branded keyboard and mouse!

And now you can set your reminders to August 21st at 10:00 AM PDT for the "Microsoft Blows Deadline on Elite Controller" headline if they don't exactly follow Mehedi's manufactured product announcement.

My only complaint about the Elite controller I bought is that the glue holding the rubber finish rotted after not a very long time. I had to super-glue them back. It's a quality defect in an otherwise excellent product. No idea if mine was an outlier or others had a similar issue.
