Gears 5 Early Access is Now Available

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers and Gears 5 Ultimate Edition buyers can now access Gears 5 ahead of its normal September 10 launch.

“This begins the four-day early access period for Gears 5 Ultimate Edition owners and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members, who may begin playing four days before the game’s worldwide release on September 10,” Microsoft’s Athima Chansanchai announced. “For those eager to get started immediately, the full game download is available now in advance of the game’s release.”

Those who are eager for some reason should know that Gears 5 is just more of the same, at least based on the single-player campaign I’ve been playing. My advice is to play this game as part of Xbox Game Pass and to not purchase it at full price. Unless, of course, you’re a diehard Gears fan for some reason. Or just a fan of rail-based interactive stories with terrible dialog and forced humor. Those people must exist.

On that note, remember that new subscribers can join Xbox Game Pass Ultimate today and get their first two months for $2 now through September. Which is an excellent price to pay to play this game.

I've only completed Chapter 1 so far, but I'm having fun with it. Like you said though, it's definitely more of the same. I've heard it opens up a bit more later and is less linear than previous Gears games. More like a Metro game. Anyway, it's a great deal on Game Pass.

In reply to yoshi:

Yeah, if you like Gears 4, it's just like that. At least so far: Gears 4 did surprise me with a different kind of sequence towards the end, so this might surprise as well.

I made it though the training session. Got my 5 gamer score and then the wife said "don't you have some work to do". I also hope it has a very open story line to it.

Not angry, just correct. Gears is bad.

Metacritic shows a score of 85 by official reviewers and a score of 90 by user ratings. So this game definitely has its place. I prefer first person shooters but I think that one is fun in co-op mode. I play the campaign with my son, me on the Xbox one x and him on the pc. Crossplay is an asset.

I spent several hours in Gears 5 yesterday evening and i have to agree with Paul on this one. Its a nice game, no doubt but yeah, it is just more of the same if you already played Gears 4.
