Microsoft announced today that it has now sold over 200 million copies of Minecraft, the hit virtual world game. It is also consolidating each of the studios that works on Minecraft into a single studio called Mojang Studios.
“We are humbled that there have now been more than 200 million copies of Minecraft sold to date, and 126 million people are now playing Minecraft every month,” the Microsoft announcement notes. “We are excited to launch Minecraft Dungeons on May 26 with Xbox Game Pass and multiple platforms, and to bring our free Nether update to Minecraft this Summer.”
Tied to this—and to Minecraft’s 11th birthday this week—Microsoft also revealed that it is consolidating the game studios that work on Minecraft into a single studio called Mojang Studios.
“There are several studios around the world, all part of Mojang,” the firm notes. “Which, in a stroke of genius, inspired our new name, Mojang Studios.”
But there’s more: Microsoft also revealed that it has many additional plans for Minecraft too.
“From our humble beginnings in Stockholm, we are entering the 20’s as a multi-title, multi-location company,” the second announcement continues. “Following Minecraft Earth and Minecraft Dungeons, we’re planning a feature film, preparing an epic live show, and playing with ideas for brand new games.”
