Call of Duty’s 2022 Roadmap Includes Modern Warfare Sequel and New Warzone Experience

Activision has just revealed what’s on the roadmap for Call of Duty in 2022. If Vanguard, last year’s WW2-themed episode received a polarized reception, this year’s episode will be a sequel to Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2019 episode.

In addition to this new Mordern Warfare episode, the same studio is also working on a new Warzone experience, and both projects will use a brand new game engine. “The new game and a new Warzone experience are designed together from the ground-up,” Activision said today, and it will be interesting to see how this new engine will scale across last-gen and current-gen consoles.

Call of Duty: Warzone is Activision’s successful take on the free-to-play battle royale genre, and the company teased some exciting additions for the new Warzone experience developed by Infinity Ward. “Expect a massive evolution of Battle Royale with all-new playspace and a new sandbox mode,” the blog post reads.

As you probably know by now, Call of Duty, one of the most popular annualized video games franchises should soon become a Microsoft property. The Redmond giant agreed last month to acquire Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion in cash, which will be the biggest acquisition in the company’s history. In addition to Call of Duty, Microsoft will also get its hands on Diablo, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, as well as the popular mobile game Candy Crush.

In recent years, the Call of Duty franchise has really thrived on PlayStation due to Activision’s marketing deals with Sony. However, the Redmond giant has reiterated earlier this week that future Call of Duty games will continue to ship on PlayStation consoles even after Microsoft completes its acquisition of Activision. Even better, the company also announced that it wants to bring Call of Duty and other Activision franchises to the Nintendo Switch.
