Sony’s PlayStation 5 Crosses Over 40 Million Units Sold Since Launch

PlayStation 5

Sony announced today that it has now sold over 40 million PlayStation 5 units since the console launched back in November 2020. The company had previously announced that it had sold 38.4 million PS5 consoles in its FY2022 Q4 earnings released in April.

Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment reiterated today that the supply chain issues caused by the pandemic are now a thing of the past. “For more months than I care to remember, we kept thanking our community for their patience while working through these issues. But now PS5 supply is well-stocked and we are seeing that pent up demand finally being met,” Ryan said.

The PlayStation exec also announced that there are now over 2,500 PlayStation 5 games available to consumers. Just like Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S consoles, the PlayStation 5 can also play previous generation games: all PS4 games are backwards-compatible on the PS5, while PlayStation Plus subscribers can access a selection of PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games via cloud gaming. Sony is reportedly testing cloud streaming for PS5 games as well.

Since the beginning of this new console generation, Sony has capitalized on its huge PS4 install base (over 100 million consoles sold) and new critically-acclaimed exclusive games to take the lead. Later this fall, the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is expected to be another blockbuster release, and Sony recently unveiled a PS5 Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition Bundle with a custom-designed console and controller. If Sony hasn’t shared pricing details yet, pre-orders for this limited edition PS5 bundle will start tomorrow, July 28.
