Video game giant Electronic Arts (EA) reported that it earned a net income of $402 million on revenues of $1.9 billion in the quarter ending June 30. Those figures represent gains of 29 percent and 9 percent, respectively, year-over-year (YOY).

“EA delivered a record Q1, driven by strong momentum in EA SPORTS global football and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor,” EA CEO Andrew Wilson said. “Our exceptional teams are creating innovative entertainment experiences across our multi-year pipeline, starting with the highly anticipated, culture defining titles Madden NFL 24 and EA SPORTS FC 24.”

With Activision Blizzard about to be swallowed up by Microsoft, EA stands as one of the strongest independent third-party video game companies. And like Activision Blizzard, it has a diverse array of hugely successful games and franchises, including Battlefield, Dead Space, Mass Effect, Need for Speed, the Sims, and the EA SPORTS lineup, which includes the FIFA, Madden NFL, NBA Live, NHL, PGA and UFC series.

EA reported that net bookings—which it defines as the number of products and services sold digitally or sold-in physically—in the quarter were up 21 percent YOY to $1.58 billion. Its live services business delivered 75 percent of those revenues, or $1.17 billion, up 4 percent. EA SPORTS FIFA delivered record revenues for this fiscal quarter, while Star Wars Jedi: Survivor “launched to critical acclaim and commercial success,” with “millions of players around the world.”
