Microsoft Tweaks How Xbox Game DVR Works With New OneDrive Integration

Xbox Game DVR OneDrive

A new Xbox update will change how Game DVR works on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles today. Going forward, Xbox gamers will no longer be able to save game captures on the Xbox network indefinitely as clips and screenshots that have been uploaded there will now be deleted after 90 days.

While this may impact your ability to share clips and screenshots with your Xbox friends, today’s Xbox update also makes it possible to automatically upload clips and screenshots to OneDrive. This feature has been in testing with Xbox Insiders since last month, and it’s been a popular request. Until now, only manual uploads to OneDrive were supported, while uploads to the Xbox Network could be automatic (though with limited storage).

In the Captures app, Xbox users will be able to see all game captures on the Xbox network that are set to be deleted. This app will also let gamers easily back up their existing Xbox Network clips to OneDrive or an external drive.

Microsoft emphasized today that Xbox clips backed up on OneDrive can then be edited on the company’s Clipchamp video editor. While this is no replacement for a native video editing app on Xbox consoles, Clipchamp is actually quite capable and it’s now preinstalled on Windows 11.

Microsoft also highlighted a new way to discover in-game events by scrolling down to the Events channel on the Xbox Home screen. Starting with this update, Xbox users will also see suggestions to download entertainment apps such as Spotify, Apple TV, or Disney+ when setting up a new Xbox console. Lastly, if you’re in the US, the Microsoft Store on Xbox will also start highlighting sports games to play and watch this September and October.
