Sony’s Smaller PlayStation 5 is Now Available in the US

Smaller PlayStation 5 Slim

The smaller PlayStation 5 console that Sony announced last month is now available for purchase in the US. For now, you can only purchase the $499.99 “PS5 Slim” with a disc drive, but you can also wait for the discless PlayStation 5 Digital Edition which will be priced at $449.99.

“We’re entering a holiday season with more console supply than we’ve had since the launch of PS5, including a new PS5 model in a smaller form factor. Players can also find PS5 bundles for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, EA Sports FC 24, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III,” Sony said this week.

The new PS5 Slim is available to purchase from direct.playstation.com, Amazon, and other retailers. Thanks to an early Black Friday deal, you can get a free copy of the just-released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III with a purchase of the new PS5 Slim.

Sony will continue to sell the original PlayStation 5 console while supplies last, but after that, the Slim model will become the only version you can purchase. If you choose the $449.99 PS5 Digital Edition, you’ll still be able to purchase the attachable disc drive for $79.99.

The PS5 Slim is 30% smaller and up to 24% lighter compared to the original model, so it might fit better in your TV cabinet. While a horizontal stand is included in the box, the vertical stand that Sony offered with the original is now a separate purchase ($29.99). Under the hood, the console’s specs remain the same.

Sony announced yesterday that PlayStation 5 sales had reached 46.5 million units since launched, with Sony selling 4.9 million PS5s in the previous quarter. It will be interesting to see if this new slim model will help to drive sales during the holiday season. Microsoft, however, could launch a refreshed version of its Xbox Series X with no disc drive next year according to an internal roadmap that leaked in September.
