Sony Removes “8K” Logo From PlayStation 5 Boxes

Sony PlayStation 5 Box No 8K logo

Sony appears to have quietly removed the “8K” logo on PlayStation 5 Slim boxes. Consoles on Sony’s PlayStation Direct store no longer show the 8K logo on the box as of this writing, though other retailers like Walmart still have it.

This 8K logo has been present on the console’s packaging since the launch of the PS5 back in November 2020. However, as many consumers have yet to upgrade from FullHD to 4K TVs, it’s clear we’re still many years away from 8K TVs becoming mainstream technology.

John Linneman, a Senior Staff Writer for Digital Foundry said on X (via Eurogamer) that removing this 8K logo “should have been done years ago,” adding that “8K is not suitable for these machines.” Indeed, many current-gen games don’t even run in native 4K on the PS5, so Sony advertising 8K support for the PS5 was a pure marketing ploy.

In an official FAQ published for the launch of the PS5 back in November 2020, Sony explained that “PS5 is compatible with 8K displays at launch, and after a future system software update will be able to output resolutions up to 8K when content is available, with supported software.” However, 8K support isn’t exactly something Sony has been marketing heavily in recent years.

With Sony reportedly planning to release a more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro later this fall, it will be interesting to see if this 8K logo could resurface on the PS5 Pro’s box. But maybe Sony did realize that the upcoming console isn’t going to popularize 8K content either.
