Sony revealed in its FY2024 Q2 financial results yesterday that it has now sold 65 million PlayStation 5 consoles. The company sold 3.8 million PS5 consoles in the quarter, down from 4.9 million in the same period last year, but the company did see an increase of monthly active users and game sales.

Monthly active users across all PlayStation platforms were up 8% YoY in September to 116 million accounts. The company also sold 77.7 million games in Q2 2024, up 14.9% year-over-year. Overall, Sony’s game and network services division brought $7.01 billion in revenue in the quarter, up 12% from a year ago.

The company noted that sales of of third-party games “significantly grew” this quarter, thanks in part to “an action RPG title from China.” This is likely the PS5 console exclusive Black Myth Wukong, which sold over 20 million units on its first month on PS5 and PC. Sony also cited the good performance of Astro Bot, its latest first-party game that sold over 1.5 million units in nine weeks.

In its earnings report, Sony also looked back at the varying successes of its live service game experiments. “We launched two live service games this year. Helldivers 2 was a huge hit, while Concord ended up being shut down. We gained a lot of experience and learned a lot from both,” the company explained.

With the new PlayStation 5 Pro hitting the market yesterday right in time for the holiday season, Sony believes that its “platform business has strong momentum,” and the company expects a “stable expansion of user engagement and associated revenue growth” throughout the rest of its fiscal year. The company also said that it’s “making steady progress in the development of new titles and in improving our live service game processes.”
