The new Xbox Adaptive Joystick that Microsoft first announced in August 2024 alongside other accessibility accessories is now available to purchase from the Microsoft Store. The $29.99 accessory has been designed in collaboration with players with disabilities and accessibility experts, and it needs to be connected to an Xbox Adaptive Controller or an Xbox console or PC with a USB cable.
“With more than 429 million players with disabilities worldwide, we know each player has unique needs and preferences for how they choose to play,” said Jenny Lay-Flurrie, Vice President and Chief Accessibility Officer at the Microsoft Ability Summit 2025 today. “The Xbox Adaptive Joystick is a singular, wired controller primarily designed to meet the needs of players with limited mobility. Its versatility helps players seamlessly incorporate it into their existing gaming setups.”
The singular controller comes with an Xbox thumbstick, four buttons on the front, and two buttons on the top that match the functionality of the bumper and trigger on regular Xbox controllers. There’s also a ¼”-20 threaded connection allowing users to easily mount the accessory.
All buttons on the Xbox Adaptive Joystick can be customizable with the Xbox Accessories app. Users can also customize the thumbstick topper by using free 3D print files that can be downloaded from Microsoft’s Xbox Design Lab website.
When connected to an Xbox console or PC via a USB cable, the Xbox Adaptive Joystick will require to be linked with a secondary controller via the Xbox Controller Assist feature. That’s because the singular controller has been designed as a companion device for regular Xbox controllers and the Xbox Adaptive Controller, and it also lacks dedicated Xbox, Menu, and View buttons for navigating the Xbox UI.
The Xbox Adaptive Joystick is exclusively available to purchase from the Microsoft Store, and you can find more information about how to get started with the accessory on this support page.
