Nintendo announced today that it has sold over 3.5 million units of its new Switch 2 console in the four days that followed its global launch on June 5. Despite the new console being 50% more expensive ($449.99) than its predecessor in the US, Nintendo said this was a record-breaking launch for the company.
“This is the highest global sales level for any Nintendo hardware within the first four days,” the company’s press release reads. As pointed out by Polygon, the original Nintendo Switch only sold 2.74 million units in its first month, while Sony’s PlayStation 5, the best-selling current-gen console, shipped 4.5 million units in its first seven weeks on the market.
Overall, the 3.5 million units sold in just 4 days probably make the Nintendo Switch 2 the biggest launch in the history of video game consoles. Again, this is happening with a more expensive console that has undergone iterative improvements over the original Switch.
“Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go,” said Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer Doug Bowser in a press release. “We are thankful for their response and happy to see the fun they are already having with Nintendo Switch 2 as they explore new features and games that bring friends and family together in new ways.”
The Nintendo Switch 2 launched with just one flagship title, Mario Kart World, which is the first game in the series to offer an open world with dynamic weather conditions. The game will be followed next month by Donkey Kong Bananza, but Switch 2 players can also play a couple of blockbuster third-party games including Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, Street Fighter 6, Hogwarts Legacy, and enhanced versions of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
