Target and Walmart Won’t Stop Selling Xbox Consoles

Another day, another round of bad publicity for Xbox. This time, it’s Target and Walmart, two major US retailers, which had to comment on the alleged removal of Xbox consoles in their stores.

Over the weekend, a Reddit user claimed that their local Target was in the process of eliminating the Xbox section of their store. The post got a lot of traction, and it led other Redditors to comment on Xbox consoles becoming a rarity on the shelves of various Target and Walmart stores across the US.

After Costco recently confirmed that it had stopped selling Xbox hardware, it’s quite easy to assume that competitors could be preparing to do the same. But that’s not what’s happening right now if we believe official comments on the matter from Walmart, Target, and Microsoft.

Destin Legarie, who previously learned about Costco’s decision to drop Xbox consoles, decided to look into the situation and contacted his local Walmart and Target stores. “Both stores haven’t heard anything about pulling stock or discontinuing Xbox. They both also have Xbox in stock,” he tweeted yesterday.

While it’s true that Xbox Series X|S consoles may regularly go out of stock across various retailers, including the Microsoft Store, Microsoft confirmed in a statement shared with Windows Central that Target and Walmart had no plans to drop Xbox hardware. “Target and Walmart, among other retailers, remain committed partners for Xbox consoles, accessories, and games.”

The combination of hardware and Game Pass price increases still doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence in Microsoft’s business strategy. And the fact that the company regularly needs to address Xbox rumors is also becoming really problematic.

Last week, the company was forced to respond to a forum post alleging that its next-gen Xbox plans were “up in the air,” but the damage had already been done. Before that, former Microsoft exec and Blizzard boss publicly said on X that Xbox consoles are “dead,” a brutal comment that led to another round of bad PR for the company.

It’s not all bad for Xbox fans right now as we’re just a couple of days away from the release of the Asus ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X. The two Xbox-branded gaming handhelds will start shipping on October 16 in select markets, with prices starting at $599 in the US.
