It’s possibly the worst kept secret in videogames, but now it’s not a secret: Microsoft is bringing Halo to the PlayStation 5.
“We are all seeking to meet people where they are,” Xbox president Matt Booty told The New York Times. “Our biggest competition isn’t another console. We are competing more and more with everything from TikTok to movies.”
Microsoft will release a new remake of the first Halo title, called Halo Campaign Evolved, to the PlayStation 5 next year in addition to its release on Xbox Series X and S, the PC, Game Pass, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It will enable four-player cooperative campaign play but no multiplayer and deliver new 4K visuals, updated animations, remastered music, and re-recorded voice lines.
The “new” Halo follows several other high profile Xbox and Microsoft Game Studio titles heading to PS5, including Gears of War: Reloaded, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Forza Horizon 5. But Halo is arguably Microsoft’s crown jewel, so this one will be controversial with fans.
Halo Campaign Evolved is being remade with Unreal Engine 5 and should look incredible on the PS5.
“We are evolving the experience,” Halo Studios head Pierre Hintze said. “There is a level of detail with which we now can express the original artistic vision and goals.”
“We talk about this as another era for Halo,” Halo COO and general manager Elizabeth Van Wyck added.
