Epic Games, the developer of the popular Unreal Engine that powers Fortnite and many other games, announced a new partnership with rival engine Unity. Developers will be able to make Unity games available through Fortnite, which evolved into a hub featuring various game experiences in recent years.
“Just like the early days of the web, we believe that companies need to work together in order to build the open metaverse in a way that’s interoperable and fair,” said Tim Sweeney, Founder and CEO of Epic Games. “Working alongside Unity we’re helping developers build fun games, reach bigger audiences, and find success.”
While Unity games may find a new audience within Fortnite in the coming months, Unity’s cross-platform commerce platform is also adding support for Epic Games’ Unreal Engine. “This will give Unreal developers more choice for managing everything from their digital catalogs and payment providers to web shops across PC, mobile, and web,” Epic Games said today.
Since its release back in 2017, Fortnite has become much more than a battle royale game. There are now role-playing, platforming, driving, and many other experiences, and Epic Games has released various tools to make it easy for game developers and hobbyists to make games inside Fortnite. There’s not as much variety as in Roblox, another popular metaverse-like platform, but the arrival of Unity games may well help Fortnite to get there.
