Xbox Cloud Gaming Appears to Be Readying Ad-Supported Tier

Microsoft may launch a new ad-supported tier for its Xbox Cloud Gaming service pretty soon, if we believe recent images mentioning the new offering. Last week, some Xbox Cloud Gaming users started seeing a new “1 hour of ad-supported playtime per session” message on the service’s loading screen, which suggests that an official announcement may be coming soon.

Over the weekend, The Verge’s Tom Warren, who first reported in October that a free ad-supported Xbox Cloud Gaming tier was in the pipeline, shared an image of the Xbox Cloud Gaming loading screen mentioning this new tier. He was followed by Windows Central’s Jez Corden yesterday.

According to both reporters, this ad-supported version of Xbox Cloud Gaming won’t require a Game Pass subscription: It will allow gamers to stream select Xbox games they own for free for a limited time (1 hour, if we believe the message on the loading screen) after watching pre-roll ads.

Nvidia has a similar free ad-supported offering with its GeForce Now cloud gaming service, and it’s also limited to 1 hour of gameplay. As you may know, Xbox Cloud Gaming already lets you play Fortnite for free without a Game Pass subscription, but game sessions are also limited to one hour. As of today, there are no ads when you launch Fortnite on Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Microsoft used to require an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription to access Xbox Cloud Gaming, but that changed last year when cloud gaming access was expanded to all Game Pass tiers. However, Game Pass Standard and Ultimate members still enjoy priority access to cloud servers and improved streaming quality.

In November, Microsoft announced that Xbox Cloud Gaming Usage was up 45% year-over-year, and the launch of a free, ad-supported tier will likely help support that growth. It also helps that the service is now available on more devices than ever, including smart TVs from Samsung, LG, HiSense, with support for Android TV coming soon as well.
