Xbox’s Disc to Digital Program to Launch for Select Insiders on August 31

The Xbox has officially announced its disc-to-digital program that will allow Xbox Series X and Xbox One owners to digitize their physical game collection. The new feature will become available for select Xbox Insiders on August 31, and Microsoft will start with “thousands” of titles.

“Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has,” the Xbox team explained.

Xbox players will lose their digital entitlement if the supported disc is used on another console or another connected Xbox profile on the same console. This is done to ensure that the same physical disc can provide a digital entitlement to every Xbox player that will insert it into their Xbox One or Xbox Series X console.

The fact that Microsoft’s disc-to-digital feature also unlocks Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming access on supported games is a great way to make Xbox games playable across the Xbox ecosystem. “While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come,” the Xbox team said today.
