Microsoft Reportedly Obtained Cloud Streaming Rights for GTA VI on Xbox Consoles

If Sony beat Microsoft to strike a marketing deal with Rockstar Games for the upcoming GTA VI, the Redmond Giant reportedly has another card up its sleeve. The Verge’s Tom Warren reported earlier today that during a recent internal meeting with employees, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma teased that Xbox has obtained game streaming rights for the blockbuster game launching on November 19.

Sharma said during the meeting that the deal with Rockstar Games regarding GTA VI was something “no other platform holder is doing.” Warren’s initial report led to a quick response from Xbox Chief Strategy Officer, who didn’t explicitly deny the cloud streaming deal.

“While the excitement for GTAVI and XBOX is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting. We are looking forward to launching GTAVI on XBOX November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC,” Ball posted.

Ball’s message suggests that Microsoft will restrict the cloud-enabled version of GTA VI to Xbox consoles, so the game won’t be available on other platforms like smart TVs, PCs, and mobile devices that can access Xbox Cloud Gaming via a web browser. To my knowledge, this would be a first for Microsoft’s cloud gaming service, and this would mean that Xbox One gamers would probably benefit the most from this.

Restricting the availability of GTA VI on Xbox Cloud Gaming somewhat defeats the purpose of the technology, which aims to make games playable on any device that can connect to the Internet. However, Rockstar Games may prefer not to make GTA VI available on PC via cloud gaming to not cannibalize sales of a future native PC port.

While we’re just six weeks away from the global release of GTA VI on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, it will be interesting to see how Rockstar Games will communicate about the game’s availability on Xbox Cloud Gaming. GTA VI is already being marketed as “playing best on PS5,” and Sony may not be very happy about Xbox trying to disrupt that narrative.

While making GTA VI available on Xbox Cloud Gaming on consoles would certainly be a big coup for Microsoft, the company is about to severely restrict the service. Starting in November, there will be new monthly usage limits for all Game Pass members, with a maximum of 15 hours of cloud gaming per month for Game Pass Ultimate members. However, Microsoft already said that it will be possible to purchase additional cloud playtime through the Microsoft Store.
