AMD announced today that FSR 4.1, the latest version of the company’s FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, is coming to Xbox Series X|S consoles in addition to Radeon RX 6000 Series GPUs, and Ryzen AI 9, Ryzen AI Max, and select Ryzen Z2 CPUs. The new machine learning-based upscaling technology will also benefit the Asus ROG Ally and ROG Ally X gaming handhelds, which both use AMD chips.
AMD first made FSR 4 available on RX 9000 and 7000 Series GPUs, and the version 4.1 of the technology uses a streamlined model that will deliver “a jump in visual fidelity” to gamers using supported AMD-powered devices. However, Xbox gamers will have to wait, as FSR 4.1 support is coming “soon” on the Series X and the Series S.
As you may know, AMD’s older FSR 1 and FSR 2 technologies were already integrated into the Xbox Game Development Kit, and it was up to game developers to make use of them to improve graphics quality. CD Projekt Red notably used the technology in the Xbox version of Cyberpunk 2077, and it helped to bring a 60 FPS Performance mode to the less powerful Xbox Series S.
With FSR 4.1, Xbox consoles are about to get a more advanced machine-learning-based image reconstruction technology that may well rival the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology that Sony shipped on its PlayStation 5 Pro. Earlier this month, the company also detailed Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a simpler AI upscaling technology that will benefit the base PlayStation 5. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first two PS5 games that will add support for QSSR, and it will be interesting to see if AMD’s FSR 4.1 will help Microsoft’s Xbox consoles to join the AI upscaling conversation.
