The Elder Scrolls VI, the much-anticipated new episode in Bethesda’s popular open-world RPG series, finally has a name eight years after its initial E3 2018 announcement. In a short trailer, Bethesda revealed today that the official name of the game is The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, but it still has no release date.
The Elder Scrolls VI will have the difficult task of meeting fans’ high expectations after so many years without a new Elder Scrolls game. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which was initially released back in 2011, is one of the best-selling games of all time with over 65 million copies sold. Skyrim also remains Bethesda’s last critically acclaimed game after both Fallout 4 and Skyrim failed to break the 90+ bar on Metacritic.
Bethesda still isn’t ready to share more details about The Elder Scrolls VI, and it remains to be seen if Microsoft, which now owns Bethesda, will want to keep the game exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem. Three years ago, a court document from the FTC v. Microsoft trial revealed that Microsoft was planning to make The Elder Scrolls VI Xbox/PC exclusive, but I guess that anything is now possible under the new leadership of Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.
As Bethesda is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the publisher also shared a special message from executive producer Todd Howard, who is leading the development of The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5. The latter will likely be released after the new Elder Scrolls game, but it’s still many years away.
Microsoft likely has more gaming announcements this month to celebrate 25 years of Xbox. With the release of GTA VI on November 19, this should be a very busy month in terms of video games news.
