Epic and Google CEOs Met, Didn’t Reach a Settlement

The attorneys representing Epic and Google in their antitrust trial reported that the CEOs of the two companies met on December 7 but were unable to reach a settlement in the case.

“The Court ordered Google and Epic Games to exchange written settlement proposals and to meet in person to discuss a potential settlement,” a legal filing in Epic v. Google explains. “After the parties exchanged written settlement proposals, Google vice president Sameer Samat and president Don Harrison met with Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney (CEO, Epic Games) on December 6, 2023, to discuss a potential settlement. The meeting lasted 60-90 minutes.”

“After that meeting, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Mr. Sweeney met in person for a follow-up discussion about a potential settlement,” the document continues. “That meeting occurred the next day, December 7, 2023, and lasted approximately 60 minutes. Counsel for Google (Glenn Pomerantz) and Epic Games (Gary Bornstein) attended both meetings.”

The meeting between Pichai and Sweeney did not result in a settlement, unfortunately.

As you may recall, U.S. District Judge James Donato ordered the two companies to meet in person after he discovered they had never even tried to resolve their antitrust dispute before heading to court. But now that they have, the jury in the case is free to render its verdict, which, by all accounts, will likely not go well for Google. So Judge Donato has issued a verdict form to the jury.
