Nintendo reported that it earned a net profit of ¥147 billion (about $928 million) on revenues of ¥518 billion (~$3.3 billion) in the quarter ending June 30, 2026. Those figures represent an increase of 53.5 percent and a decline of 9.5 percent, respectively, year-over-year (YOY).
Coming just one year after the launch of the Switch 2 videogame console, these results are not good. But it could have been much worse: Nintendo’s results were bolstered by the film The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which took in $1 billion USD at the box office in the quarter.
“First-quarter sales for Nintendo Switch 2 did not reach the level seen in the same quarter of last fiscal year, which was when the console launched,” Nintendo explained. “However, for a hardware system in its second year, sales compared favorably to the adoption trajectory of Nintendo Switch … [And] there are more titles for Nintendo Switch 2 than there were in the first year for Nintendo Switch, and numerous other titles are in active development.”
Nintendo sold 3.82 million Switch 2 units in the quarter, a decline of 34.4 percent when compared to the 5.82 million units it sold in the year-ago quarter. It also sold 660,000 Switch units, a decline of 31.8 percent. Nintendo has now sold 23.7 million Switch 2 consoles overall and 157 million OG Switch consoles.
Software sales were up, at least, with Nintendo selling 9.46 million units of Switch 2 software titles and 33.81 million OG Switch units; those figures represent YOY gains of 9.2 and 38.6 percent, respectively. Digital game sales jumped 90 percent to ¥132.7 billion, with 61.5 percent of all software sales now digital, up from 59.3 percent in the year-ago quarter. The top-selling Switch 2 titles cumulatively include Mario Kart World (15.39 million), Donkey Kong Bananza (4.78 million), and Pokémon Legends: Z-A (3.99 million).
Nintendo’s IP related business earned ¥34.8 billion in the quarter thanks to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, for a gain of 107.4 percent YOY. This is the second-highest box office performance for a movie based on a videogame, behind only The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023. And Nintendo plans to release a live-action movie of The Legend of Zelda in 2027.
Looking ahead, Nintendo expects to sell 16.5 million Switch 2 consoles in the fiscal year ending March 31, down from 19.86 million units in the previous fiscal year. The OG Switch should sell about 2 million units.
