Sony Partners with Discord

Sony announced today that it will integrate Discord with PlayStation on consoles and mobile as part of a new partnership with the chat service.

“We’re constantly looking for new ways to enable players around the world to connect with one another, form new friendships and communities, and share fun experiences and lasting memories,” Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan writes. “It’s in this spirit that we’re excited to announce a new partnership with Discord, the communication service popularized by gamers and used by more than 140 million people every month around the world.”

Under the terms of the partnership, Sony will “bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.” And Sony is making a minority investment in Discord ahead of an expected public offering.

Discord recently turned down a $12 billion acquisition offer from Microsoft, which, if consummated, would have integrated the service with Xbox instead.

Very curious if the door is still open for Microsoft for a similar partnership. I doubt it is, but still, would be extremely interesting if PlayStation and Xbox users could seemlessly play together using Discord, and since Discord is still an independent company, I think the possibility still may exist.

Yeah, you would think Sony would have said "exclusive" in the announcement if it was an exclusive deal.

I can imagine Phil going, "oh hell no" when he heard Sony was trying to snap up Starfield.

Yes, this would be very cool, if Microsoft could add Discord into Xbox as well. This would also create a stronger incentive to have cross play games between PlayStation and Xbox.

I’m also wondering if this was (at least partially) a reason why Discord shunned Microsoft’s offer.

I honestly think Discord made a huge mistake not taking that 12 billion from Microsoft. I like Discord but I can see it as something that wont be around in 10 years.

Strongly agree. I find it difficult to see discord existing as an independent public company

It’s a bit difficult to have an opinion on this, without knowing the details. If they really walked away from 12 billions, i guess they had their reasons

Hopefully it’s better than the awful Xbox integration.

Partners with Discord? There’s a juicily ironic headline. :)
