For the past year or so, we’ve speculated about the next generation of Xbox hardware running on Arm and not x86. Well, it looks like it’s happening.
Brad sent me a Qualcomm job listing that specifically mentions “the next generation of Surface and Xbox products built on Snapdragon solutions.” This could be reference to a coming Xbox handheld gaming device, a new generation of Arm-based Xbox consoles, or both.
Whatever the details, whoever gets this job will “work with internal and external stakeholders including legal, finance, business units, marketing, and field teams to help define the next generation Surface and Xbox portfolios,” among other things. It’s a full-time job in, wait for it, Redmond, Washington.
That future Surfaces PCs will be based on Snapdragon processors is no surprise. But Xbox moving to Arm for its next-generation products wasn’t a given, and it’s not clear whether the expected introduction of competing Arm architectures, possibly including Nvidia, will change things. But this is exciting news, even if the only thing that comes out of this is a handheld gaming device.
