SoundCloud Comes to Xbox One, Windows 10

Microsoft announced today that the SoundCloud app for Xbox One is now available, as is a beta version for Windows 10 for PCs.

“Your music listening options on Xbox One just got better,” Microsoft’s Megan Hodel writes. “With access to the world’s largest, constantly expanding mix of music from emerging talent and the world’s biggest artists, SoundCloud on Xbox One is one of the best ways to listen to the music you love while you game.”

SoundCloud is a curious service, as it offers both music and non-music audio selections. According to Wikipedia, the source of all that is holy on the Internet, SoundCloud originated as a way for musicians to distribute their own music digitally, and it quickly overtook MySpace among that audience.

By 2014, however, SoundCloud had started down a more traditional route, and the service eventually launched a subscription offering too.

The SoundCloud apps on Xbox One and Windows 10 support both free and paid accounts, Microsoft says. Like other music services on Xbox One, you can use SoundCloud as a background music source while playing games. Microsoft notes the following additional features on Xbox One:

  • Use familiar SoundCloud features, including your favorite tracks and newest releases
  • Use your voice to play and skip tracks using Cortana
  • Find new artists and songs that you can’t find anywhere else to create unique playlists—discover new remixes from well-known and up-and-coming artists

The SoundCloud app is free on both platforms.
