PlayStation 4 Sales Hit 67.5 Million Units

PlayStation 4 Sales Hit 67.5 Million UnitsAs part of its quarterly earnings report this week, Sony revealed that sales of its PlayStation 4 consoles have continued growing year-over-year. And the firm has now sold 67.5 million units.

Sony’s PS4 sales figures come from a supplemental information document related to the earnings. There, we learn the following:

Sony sold 4.2 million PS4 consoles in the quarter, up from 3.9 million in the same quarter a year ago. That’s also the most console sales it’s seen in the past year and a half, not including the holiday 2016 quarter (when it sold 9.7 million units).

Doing a little math, we know that Sony had sold 63.3 million PS4 consoles through the previous quarter. So when you add 4.4 million to that, you get 67.5 million total PS4 console sales.

Pretty impressive. Also, you may recall that Sony recently revealed that it has sold over 1 million PlayStation VR kits, which makes it one of the most popular VR platforms on earth too.

This is really good news for an Xbox fan like me. Microsoft (Xbox) does it's best work while battling from the underdog position. Since Xbox sales do not affect my budget directly (well, aside from the -$500 coming 11/7), I am fine with them being outsold by Sony. Competition is great for gamers.

PS4 sales are up. The Nintendo Switch is doing great. I'm sure Microsoft has all kinds of good news prepared for after the Xbox One X launch.

This is what winning looks like.

It's hard to believe to believe that even years after b the PS4 is still selling will. This probably does not bode well for XBOX One. It's doubtful that buyers of the PS4 will spend the money to buy the Xbox One X.

I'm astonished that they are doing so well. I don't know why people are still buying it en mass. Did someone spike the drinking water to make people buy it? The XBOX ONE what ever is such a better machine over all with tons of streaming apps and TV integration that I absolutely love with voice control that actually works with Cortana via The Kinect. The games are fantastic and I have never had an Xbox 360 or an Xbox One ever die on me. But Microsoft is doing fine with XBOX and it's not a zero sum game. They should not worry about market share so much as making their current customers happy and making the best product they can. Will be interesting to see where sales are in a year once the XBOX ONE X gets it's price lowered for Christmas 2018.

In reply to chaad_losan:

I have seen both Xbox One and PS4 in action at friend's house, and can confirm that Dashboard & UI speed/response in general is much better on PS4 compared with Xbox One. Also the games load a bit faster on PS4. Moreover same games have either better Graphics or framerate on Ps4 compared with Xbox One.

Hopefully, this changes with Xbox One X…
