Google Maps Gets Real Time Journey Tracking on iOS

Google Maps is getting a massive new feature on iPhones today. The company today added the ability to share the progress of your journey in real time with your friends and family on iOS.

Journey sharing has been available on Android in the past.

With journey sharing, you can easily share your location with friends and family as you are travelling. When enabled, the feature will share your destination, the directions for your journey, as well as your device’s battery life. The person you are sharing your location with can also choose to share their own location with you, which is really helpful when you trying to meet a friend in a new area.

With today’s update, Google is also bringing the ability to share your journey progress to third-party apps, on both Android and iOS.

This feature will be even more useful once we all get our mandatory ID chips implanted in a few years.

I have a business that runs truck routes around a city.

We have used Google location tracking to analyze operations efficiencies.

The problem with Google's technology is that it only pings for location once per 5-minutes.

This provides highly inaccurate data because the trucks are moving anywhere from 20 mph to 70 mph with stops lasting 1 minute to 5 minutes.

As an Android user I was unaware this was missing from maps on iOS. It's been handy for the very reason given – I'm on my way to meet someone and it's nice to let them know how far away I am. It's a journey share, not a life share (although that's also available)
