Google Announces Google DeepMind

Google DeepMind is a new business unit that combines two previously separate AI teams from the online giant, Google Research’s Brain team and DeepMind.

“To ensure the bold and responsible development of general AI, we’re creating a unit that will help us build more capable systems more safely and responsibly,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced. “Combining all this talent into one focused team, backed by the computational resources of Google, will significantly accelerate our progress in AI.”

Google Deepmind will be led by Demis Hassabis, and Jeff Dean has been promoted to Chief Scientist for Google and Google Deepmind, and will report directly to Mr. Pichai. The two will help set the future direction of Google’s AI research and will lead its most critical and strategic technical projects related to AI. The first of these projects will be a series of powerful, multimodal AI models.

Pichai added that Google Research will continue its work leading fundamental advances in computer science across areas such as algorithms and theory, privacy and security, quantum computing, health, climate and sustainability, and responsible AI.
