Google is Testing New ‘AI Mode’ Button on its Search Homepage

Google is testing a new AI mode button on the homepage of its search engine. The company confirmed to The Verge that the experimental button is only visible for users who opted to test AI features in Search via Google’s Search Labs program, which isn’t available in all markets.

Some users on X have been seeing this new AI mode button in different places: It can appear right inside the search bar or replace the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button below it. “We often test different ways for people to access our helpful features,” said Google spokesperson Ashley Thompson to The Verge. “This is just one of many experiments.”

AI Mode is a new generative AI feature that provides ChatGPT-like answers with more advanced reasoning and multimodal capabilities than the existing AI Overviews that Google has been testing at the top of its search results page. AI Mode uses a custom version of Google’s Gemini 2.0 model, and the AI-powered responses include web links and allow users to ask follow-up questions.

Google said earlier this month that AI Mode in Google Search would first be offered to Google One AI Premium as an opt-in experience in its Search Labs program. It looks like Google is now testing the new AI feature with more users, and we’ll likely hear more about it during the company’s I/O developer conference next week.
