Deal: Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 is Currently $500 Off

Surface Duo 2

Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 is currently down to $999 in the US, its lowest price ever. For a limited time, the US Microsoft Store and Best Buy are both offering $500 discounts on all versions of the dual-screen device (via Windows Central).

The Surface Duo 2 is available in two finishes, Glacier and Obsidian, and the base $999 model offers just 128GB of storage. For $100 more, you can get 256GB of storage, which is probably recommended as the Surface Duo 2 has no microSD card slot. As of this writing, the 512GB variant is out of stock.

Microsoft Surface Duo 2 was released back in Fall 2021, and it addressed many of the original Surface Duo’s shortcomings. The triple lens camera system on the back takes much better pictures, and the Surface Duo 2 also added 5G support, NFC, and a fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button.

It used to be hard to recommend the Surface Duo 2 with its initial $1,499 price tag, but it’s now much easier to forgive the device’s imperfections. Recent firmware updates have really improved the software situation on the Surface Duo 2, and the dual-screen device is also expected to receive Android 12L, a special version of Android 12 with unique features or tablets and foldables later this year.

If you’re interested in dual-screen devices, the Surface Duo 2 is now an interesting choice if you don’t mind the pretty large form factor. If you want to save even more money, both the US Microsoft Store and Best Buy also let you trade in your old device and get some cash back.

Frankly, I don’t use the Surface Duo enough as an actual voice phone device enough to really matter. They are, however, really nice as portable Internet devices which is really what I do a lot more of the day than POTS type phone service.

I picked up one a few weeks ago. I am really pleasantly surprised by the utility of this device. It really adapts to many different uses. For example I am typing this comment in laptop mode where I have a very large keyboard for typing. Side by side screens work well when using more than one app at a time. I use phone mode (single screen) when playing native android games. Screen spanned portrait mode is nice for browsing the web in a tablet type experience. Tent mode works well for watching videos or playing dolphin emulator games. Really the only moe that I don’t ever use is screen spanned landscape mode.

Microsoft has really created a pricing problem for themselves. They release the Surface Duo devices at the extreme high end cost wise, then they start with deep discounts within several months. Any potential buyers are now conditioned to just wait and get one third or even half off of the release price if they wait longer.
