Intel Launches its 14th Gen Core Desktop CPUs

Intel 14th Gen Core Desktop CPUs

Intel is launching today its new 14th gen Core desktop CPUs, which still use the same “Raptor Lake” architecture as last year’s 13th Gen Core chips. Intel’s newer “Meteor Lake” architecture, which will make its debut on mobile CPUs in December, won’t be coming to the company’s desktop CPUs immediately.

At launch, there are just six new Core i9, i7, and i5 chips. The Core i9-14900K is Intel’s new top-of-the-line CPU with a 6Ghz maximum Turbo frequency, 24 cores (8 power cores and 16 efficiency cores), and 32 threads. The Intel Core i7-14700K is also quite an upgrade with 20 cores (25% more than the previous generation) and 28 threads.

“Intel Core 14th Gen processors power an immersive gaming experience with up to 23% gaming performance uplift compared to leading competitor processors, while new gaming-focused features like Inte Application Optimization (APO) ensure better-than-ever application threading alongside existing Intel Thread Director application thread scheduling,” the company explained today.

Intel also highlighted how its Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) provides a seamless overclocking experience for its unlocked desktop CPUs. The new AI Assist feature uses machine learning to analyze a PC’s configuration to suggest overclocked values that will provide the best experience.

On the connectivity front, the new Intel 14th Gen Core desktop CPUs are quite future-proof with support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and the upcoming Thunderbolt 5 protocol that will deliver up to 80 Gbps of bandwidth. The new CPUs also maintain compatibility with the existing Intel 600 and 700 series motherboard chipsets.

Availability for Intel’s 14th Gen Core desktop CPUs will begin tomorrow at retail outlets as well as new PCs from partners. While the performance improvements in these new CPUs are definitely welcome, Intel’s next-gen Meteor Lake architecture will introduce a new 7nm manufacturing process as well as Intel’s first integrated neural processing unit (NPU) to improve AI workloads.
