AMD Announces New Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Desktop CPUs

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 CPU

AMD unveiled today its next-gen Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series desktop processors, which will launch on November 21 alongside new Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series chips. These new Threadripper 7000 CPUs use AMD’s Zen 4 architecture and a 5nm manufacturing process, and AMD is promising “world-class innovation and performance” with its new chips.

AMD hasn’t launched new high-end desktop (HEDT) Threadripper chips since 2020, so these new Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series Processors should be quite a big deal for people looking for the best CPU performance. The new Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series processors, however, are designed for professional workstations.

“AMD has a long history of leading innovation in the workstation and high-performance computing segments, and this new lineup of Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series processors marks another step on that path,” said Jack Huynh, senior vice president and GM, Computing and Graphics Business Group at AMD. “we’re confident that they will unlock incredible creative potential in our users while continuing to raise the bar on energy efficiency in the most capable platform on the planet,” the exec added.

AMD will launch three new Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series CPUs starting at $1,499 for the 7960X with 24 cores and 48 threads. The 7970X will bump that to 32 cores and 64 threads, and the top-of-the-line 7980X, which is priced at $4,999, will have 64 cores and 28 threads.

“The Threadripper 7000 Series is built to enable powerful I/O for desktop users, with up to 48 PCIe Gen 5.0 lanes for graphics, storage, and more. Capable of twice the memory bandwidth of typical dual-channel desktop systems, the quad-channel DDR5 memory controller on Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series processors can support even the most intensive workflows,” AMD said today.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series processors for professional workstations include 6 different models, with the flagship 7995WX offering no less than 96 cores, 192 threads, an up to 5.1 GHz boost frequency, and eight channels for DDR5 memory. These CPUs also support AMD PRO technologies to boost security and manageability.

AMD’s new Threadripper CPUs will launch on new PCs and workstations starting in November. However, they will require new motherboards with a TRX50 chipset for the HEDT CPUs and a WRX90 chipset for the PRO chips.
