AMD Announces Ryzen 8000G Series Desktop CPUs

After AMD announced its Ryzen 8040 Series mobile CPUs with Ryzen AI last month, the company just put the wraps off its Ryzen 8000G Series desktop CPUs. These are AMD’s first Ryzen desktop CPUs with a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) for AI workloads, but the chips also bring performance improvements for gamers and content creators.

“AMD continues to lead the AI hardware revolution by offering the broadest portfolio of processors with dedicated AI engines in the x86 market,” said Jack Huynh, senior vice president and general manager, Computing and Graphics Group at AMD. “Last year at CES, we introduced the first dedicated AI engine in an x86 processor for the mobile market. This year, we are expanding our AI leadership to desktop computing through our Ryzen 8000G Series processors. We’re excited to lead the AI PC era together with our close OEM and ecosystem partners.”

AMD’s new Ryzen 8000G Series desktop CPUs use the company’s new AM5 socket as well as AMD’s Zen 4 architecture. The lineup includes four CPUs with up to 8 cores and 16 threads for the Ryzen 7 8700G, with a Radeon 780M GPU that is “the fastest built-in graphics you can get in a desktop processor,” according to AMD. With its 6 cores, 12 threads, and Radeon 760 graphics, the Ryzen 5 8600G is the second (and last) chip in the lineup to include a dedicated NPU.

AMD’s new Ryzen 8000G Series desktop CPUs will be available for consumers starting January 31. New desktop PCs using these chips will also start shipping in Q2 2024, the company said today.

Today, the chipmaker also introduced new Ryzen 5000 desktop CPUs that still use its older AM4 socket and Zen 3 CPU architecture. These chips will also be available for purchase on January 31 with prices starting at $125.

There are four different chips in the new Ryzen 5000 Series lineup, including the top-of-the-line Ryzen 7 5700X3D, which is priced at $249. It comes with eight cores and 16 threads, and 100MB of on-chip memory to increase performance in games and other demanding applications.

Lastly, AMD announced today that new laptops from Acer, Asus, Lenovo, HP and Razer with Ryzen 8040 mobile CPUs and Ryzen AI are coming at CES. We are going to hear a lot about “AI PCs” at CES this year, and we shouldn’t need to wait much longer to see Intel announce more of its 14th gen “Meteor Lake” chips with dedicated NPUs.
