Qualcomm has canceled the Snapdragon Dev Kit, its mini PC powered by a Snapdragon X Elite chip that was announced at Microsoft’s Build developer conference in May. According to a report from XDA, the company has sent an email to customers explaining it made the decision to “pause” the product and its support because it didn’t meet its quality standards.
Developer Jeff Geerling received the same message from Qualcomm in an email from Arrow Electronics. You can read it below:
Dear Valued Customer,
Please see this important message from Qualcomm:
”At Qualcomm, we are dedicated to pioneering leading technology and delivering premium experiences to our valued customers. The launch of 30+ Snapdragon X-series powered PC’s is a testament to our ability to deliver leading technology and the PC industry’s desire to move to our next-generation technology. However, the Developer Kit product comprehensively has not met our usual standards of excellence and so we are reaching out to let you know that unfortunately we have made the decision to pause this product and the support of it, indefinitely.
Working with the developer community is a priority for Qualcomm. If you want to learn more about Windows on Snapdragon, please engage with us on Discord or head to our developer portal on Qualcomm.com. Qualcomm has authorized a refund for any charges that have been made by Arrow.“
Based upon the above, we are working to provide a full refund for any charges to your account for your purchase. You should receive this credit/refund within 10 business days. It is not necessary to return any material, if received. Unfortunately, any outstanding orders will be cancelled.
Thank you for your understanding, Arrow
Qualcomm’s abrupt decision to cancel the Snapdragon Dev Kit comes right after the company sent some units to YouTubers and influencers. If you watched Windows Weekly yesterday, you may have caught host Leo Laporte discussing the unit he had just received with Paul.
XDA reports that Qualcomm will refund all Snapdragon Dev Kit pre-orders to customers, and even those who already received their unit will get a refund without having to return it. It’s not exactly clear why Qualcomm ultimately decided to cancel the mini PC, but it had any serious hardware flaws, the company would be asking people who received one to send it back.
The Snapdragon Dev Kit was the first desktop PC powered by Qualcomm’s X Series chips, but it shouldn’t be the last. Back in June, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said that the company’s Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chips were “coming to all PC form factors.”
