Google Announces Android XR

Google is bringing its Android and Gemini platforms to extended reality (XR) via Android XR, a new OS it created with Samsung.

“Android XR combines years of investment in AI, AR, and VR to bring helpful experiences to headsets and glasses,” Google vice president Shahram Izadi explains. “We’re working to create a vibrant ecosystem of developers and device makers for Android XR, building on the foundation that brought Android to billions.”

Android XR is available now in preview for developers via updates to Android Studio, Jetpack Compose, ARCore, Unity, and OpenXR. And while it will run on traditional VR-style headsets first, Google plans to start testing prototype glasses soon using Qualcomm-based devices from a variety of hardware partners too. The first headset will be made by Samsung.

With a headset, Android XR will provide a “fully immersed virtual environment,” but you can switch into a mode in which you can see the real world and be surrounded by apps and content. Thanks to Gemini integration, you will also be able to have conversations about what you see or control the device with your voice.

Google says it is reimagining its key apps–Chrome, Maps, Photos, YouTube, and more–for headsets, but all Android phone and tablet apps will work as well.

In the future, a choice of “stylish and comfortable” glasses will provide “all-day” XR experiences and work seamlessly with your other Android devices, Google claims. Gemini will be “one tap away,” giving access to directions, translations, and message summaries without requiring you to reach for you phone.
