Microsoft Reveals the New Surface Laptop 2

Microsoft is announcing a bunch of things at its New York event today, and one of the main highlights of today’s event is the new Surface Laptop. Microsoft’s popular Surface Laptop has been due for a refresh for a while, so the updated version isn’t too much of a surprise.

As for the new Surface Laptop 2, there isn’t a ton of things to get excited about. Most of the things are remaining unchanged, though Microsoft is bumping the performance up with Intel’s new 8th gen Core processors that should also contribute to improved power consumption. The device is 85% faster than the previous model, at least according to Microsoft. It promises to offer all-day battery life, which apparently is 14.5 hours, but your mileage will obviously vary. The entry-level variant of the device now starts with 8GB RAM, and that’s a huge change for sure.

Like the new Surface Pro 6, Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 2 is now available in a new black color. Unlike the Surface Pro line, Microsoft’s Surface Laptop has never been available in a black variant so this should be a welcome change for many. Plus, a black version of the device means it will be much harder to get the Alcantara on your laptop dirty, so that’s something. Along with the new black Surface devices, Microsoft also has the Surface accessories in a new black colour so you can match all your accessories with your laptop itself.

Starts at $999. Shipping October 16.

<p>I've got to wonder how they come up with these percentage faster numbers (all the vendors, not just MS). I'll bet it's safe to assume that your favorite program won't be running 85% faster.</p>

<blockquote><em><a href="#337669">In reply to skane2600:</a></em></blockquote><p>Well the 14.5h claim is probably a looped video in edge with the screen turned down all the way. So it's safe to assume that the claim means Edge runs 85% now. You can now download Chrome 85% faster!!!!</p>

<blockquote><em><a href="#337669">In reply to skane2600:</a></em></blockquote><p>The small print reads, and I quote from the video, "<em>Up to 14.5 hours for video playback. Battery life varies significantly with settings, usage, and other factors.</em>"</p><p><br></p><p>In other words, one's mileage will vary, stating the glaringly obvious.</p>
