Surface Laptop 3 Will Reportedly Have a 15-inch Variant

Microsoft is holding a big event on the 2nd of October, where the company is expected to introduce a new Surface line. One of the core new products of the new Surface line is expected to be the next-gen Surface Laptop. And although there haven’t been many leaks about the new Surface Laptop 3, there are some interesting new details.

According to the folks at WinFuture, who are usually very accurate, Microsoft is going to launch a new 15-inch variant of the Surface Laptop 3. The new 15-inch variant will likely co-exist with the 13.5-inch variant of the device. According to details found on some European retailers’ database, there are apparently three different models for the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3.

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 3 is also expected to be powered by AMD chips this year, as we previously reported. WinFuture confirmed that all three models of the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 are powered by AMD, though it’s not clear exactly which processors are being used in these models. What would be interesting, however, is if Microsoft decided to stick to Intel for the smaller 13.5-inch variant of the device. It’s not exactly clear if Microsoft plans to keep Intel chips on the new Surface Laptop 3, though it’s almost entirely possible Microsoft will sell both AMD and Intel-powered models of the Surface Laptop 3.

I guess they would go AMD to help keep the cost down and give the option of a GPU from AMD as well? Not sure if they would be trying to place it next to a MacBook Pro?

I'm excited! I will most likely be ordering one to replace my 1st gen base model Surface Book. The integrated graphics and dual core in my Surface Book do not cut it for video editing. Even just the 3700u would be a huge step up.

Though I'm not expecting it, it would be nice if the new gen laptops were more serviceable than the old (the latter got an iFixit score of "0", ie unrepairable). I won't buy a laptop that can't be serviced.

If indeed SL3 will have an AMD version then the lack of TB makes even more sense. TB is an Intel property and it makes no sense for AMD to accommodate it. Also, proliferation of TB would offer Intel an unfair advantage against AMD. I know that Intel made it royalty free but so far only Intel has started to integrate it in the CPU itself.

I'd love to see a non fabric version as well. One of my big hang-ups with the surface laptop is that I couldn't handle it if one of my kids stained the fabric.

Could the 15in be a same form-factor as the Laptop 2 but bezel-less? That might sell me.

Discrete graphics would be fantastic. Make it compete with the XPS 15.

If they could only make them in such way it stops delivering Pentium II level performance would be nice.

I'm hoping for thunderbolt 3 although Microsoft isn't in any hurry to adopt the standard. Maybe they'll just wait for usb 4.
