Microsoft CEO’s Son Zain Nadella Has Passed Away at 26

Zain Nadella, the son of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has passed away yesterday at 26. According to GeekWire, Microsoft announced the sad news to the company’s executive team yesterday, and the message said that Satya Nadella’s family will take some time to grieve privately.

“I know we all want to support Satya during this difficult time,” said Kathleen Hogan, Microsoft’s Chief people officer in her message to Microsoft executives. “The best way right now is to hold him and his family in your thoughts and prayers, while allowing them the privacy and peace to process such a grave loss.”

In his 2017 book Hit Refresh, the Microsoft CEO reflected on his experience of being the father of a child born with cerebral palsy. Through his son, Nadella acquired a unique perspective on how technology needs to become more inclusive to support users with disabilities. Shortly after he became CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella announced a new mission statement for the company: “Empowering every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.”

“Zain will be remembered for his eclectic taste in music, his bright sunny smile and the immense joy he brought to his family and all those who loved him,” wrote Jeff Sperring, CEO of Seattle Children’s Hospital, in a message distributed to Microsoft’s executive team.

This is terrible news. I read Hit Refresh and enjoyed learning a bit about Zain and how his life helped shape Satya’s outlook on many aspects of life, including, of course, the way way he runs Microsoft.

I don’t post here very often but this broke my heart.

Knowing the many accessibility projects going on at Microsoft looked like a publicity stunt. Knowing this, for us working in the field, it means that Microsoft finally had a heart.

To be clear, I have a ton of Microsoft stock, and products. This isn’t meant to troll. On this topic specifically I have no desire to engage in anything toxic.

Mr. Nadella, my heart breaks with you.

I didn’t know he had a child much less that he had CP. Also didn’t know he wrote a book, either.

This is sad.

On the other hand, what MS has done as far as accessibility is nothing short of amazing in my book!
