Microsoft Has Reportedly Stopped Manufacturing its Surface Laptop Studio 2

Microsoft may be done with the Surface Laptop Studio line, which hasn’t seen a new model since the release of the Surface Laptop Studio 2 back in October 2023. Tom Warren from The Verge reported yesterday that Microsoft has stopped production of the 2-in-1 laptop earlier this month, and there’s currently no new version in sight.

“Sources familiar with Microsoft’s Surface plans tell me that the company stopped production of its Surface Laptop Studio 2 earlier this month. No more units are being produced, and Microsoft is planning to mark the device as end of life in June,” Warren wrote yesterday.

The Surface Laptop Studio 2 was released right after Surface inventor Panay left Microsoft to join Amazon in September 2023. Panay’s departure probably marked the end of an era for Surface devices, with the company now focusing on more popular models like the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop. Microsoft also ended production for its Surface Studio 2+ all-in-one PC in December, which was probably a good indication of where Microsoft was going with its Surface lineup.

The Surface Laptop Studio 2, which still starts at $1,999, comes with 13th-gen Intel Core CPUs and dedicated Nvidia GPUs on some models. It also includes an Intel NPU that enables AI features like Windows Studio effects. However, the laptop doesn’t meet the hardware requirements for Copilot+ PC features, which is probably why Microsoft is now discontinuing it.

A support page about driver and firmware lifecycle for Surface devices indicates that the Surface Laptop Studio 2 will be supported until October 3, 2029. If you want to purchase a Surface Laptop Studio 2 before inventory runs out, Microsoft is currently offering up to $620 discounts on some configurations of the 2-in-1 laptop.
