Ask Paul: November 25

I'm resurrecting Ask Paul as a weekly Thurrott Premium feature. Here's a first peek, which is based on email questions. Starting next week, I'll provide a forum thread for the questions and answer some of them at the end of the week. The idea is to get a running dialog going.
GDPR
Mark asks:
I'm wondering why you haven't touched on a fairly rising subject of interest lately, that being GDPR and how it will affect Microsoft, and the industry as a whole. It’s a pretty big deal, with a timeline and impact.
It's a big topic, but I just don't add any value to the conversation. Microsoft and other large tech companies will meet the regulatory requirements for individuals. And they'll help their business customers do the same, which is more of an enterprise topic (say, for Petri.com).
Entitlement
Allan asks:
Have you seen the Apple ad "What’s a computer?" That's real marketing, a quick and clever response to Nadella’s off-hand comment. They will sell a ton more iPads. Microsoft loses again.
I agree the marketing is good. But the hidden side to this is that we're looking at a child whose parents spent $1000 on Apple hardware so that she could do nothing that looks productive at all.

I've received a few emails and tweets about this Apple commercial. I guess I'm just not as impressed with it as most people are. This isn't about what is a computer, it's about what is entitlement? This kid's family is rich.
SMS Relay
Tad asks:
Microsoft SMS Relay (Messaging Everywhere) functionality seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. Yes, it's nice to be able to use Cortana/Notification center to sent texts, but It would be so much more helpful to see text threads in context in an app.
This feature is built-in to Windows 10 now. You configure it in Cortana on both Windows 10 and the phone.

Readers of Windows 10 Field Guide know that I've been updating the book for the Fall Creators Update. Well here's a bit of related news: I'll have a new chapter, called Phone, that will cover this and other related topics, available soon. Originally, I wanted to update all of the existing content before adding anything truly new, but I'm going to mix it up a bit. Stay tuned.
Phone cases
J. Todd asks:
A quick question, which case do you like for the Pixel 2 XL. I need to get a case before I drop this thing.
I usually just buy one of the Google cases, but I've come to like the really thin cases which won't help with a drop. I did order this one (in "cement") for the Pixel XL.

--

Since writing this, the phone (obviously) and case have arrived, and I've been using them together for weeks. I like the "cement" case---it has a pleasant grippy weave to it---and many people, even my wife have commented on how attractive it is.

But I do prefer really thin cases, as noted. I also preordered a Peel Super Thin Pixel 2 XL Case, but it hasn't arrived yet. (Has, in fact, been delayed.) Just be advised that these things offer next to no p...
