Amazon Introduces Fire HD 10, Kindle Kids Edition, More

Amazon has announced a new Fire HD 10, plus new products and services for kids, including Kids Editions of the Fire HD 10 and Kindle.

“We’re excited to announce new devices and experiences for kids—giving families the ability to access premium, kid-friendly FreeTime Unlimited content, all wrapped in award-winning parental controls and now available in even more places,” an Amazon representative told me.

Here’s what’s new.

All-new Fire HD 10. Amazon’s next-generation full-sized tablet is designed for entertainment and now includes a faster 2 GHz octa-core processor, longer battery life up to 12 hours, 32 GB of internal and expandable storage, USB-C, Alexa hands-free functionality, and a new picture-in-picture capability. It still costs just $150, can be preordered now, and will ship October 30.

Kindle Kids Edition. Amazon describes this device as a new reading experience designed just for kids. It’s bundled with a kid-friendly cover, a year of FreeTime Unlimited with access to over 2,500 books (and, soon, Audible audiobooks), and a two-year worry-free guarantee. Kindle Kids Edition is available for pre-order starting today for $110 and it will ship October 30.

All-new Fire HD 10 Kids Edition. This next-generation version of Amazon’s largest and fastest kids’ tablet is identical to the Fire HD 10 and includes a year of FreeTime Unlimited with over 20,000 age-appropriate eBooks, Audible audiobooks, videos, educational apps and games; a kid-proof case with adjustable stand; and a two-year worry-free guarantee. The Fire HD 10 Kids Edition is available for pre-order today, costs $200, and begins shipping on October 30.

FreeTime app on Fire TV Stick. And it’s coming soon to select Fire TV Edition smart TVs, too. FreeTime on Fire TV provides a kid-friendly video experience with parental controls. When paired with a FreeTime Unlimited subscription, kids can joy access to thousands of premium movies and TV shows, with their parents in control of the experience.

I keep hoping that one day they'll upgrade the Kindle Paperwhite. Perhaps to let you read comics and magazines.

If the OS is still based on Android 5.0, then it is still horribly out of date and many modern apps won't work on it. I have the current one and ended up getting an iPad anyway. This device will continue to be fine for Amazon related content watching, but eventually other apps won't be compatible. Wish they would update the software.

Any idea on how the Audible audio books will work on the kids edition? I'm assuming that it will be a sub set of the audio books that they have but could still be a great value If all or most of the kids books are included.
