Surface Duo 2 June Update Makes the Glance Bar More Useful

The June 2022 update for Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 has started rolling out yesterday (via Windows Central), and with it comes improved notification support on the Glance Bar. Third-party messaging apps can now display notifications on the spine of the dual-screen device when it’s closed.

The Glance Bar is one of the distinctive new features that Microsoft introduced on the Surface Duo 2. Until now, the OLED screen only lighted up to notify users about incoming calls and messages. It can also help users to adjust the volume or check the battery level when the Surface Duo 2 is charging, but the Glance Bar should now be much more useful by adding support for third-party messaging apps notifications.

The June Update for the Surface Duo 2 also enables haptic feedback control in the Camera app settings, and it also enables optimized charging to to make the battery last longer over time. The new bits also enable automatic firmware updates for the Slim Pen 2 when it’s paired via Bluetooth, as well as automatic pairing when the Slim Pen 2 is used to ink on either screen.

A new software update is also available for the original Surface Duo to improve device stability and security, but other than that there are no new features for this device. As usual, these updates will roll out gradually to Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 owners, but you can manually check for updates by going to Settings > System > System update > Check for updates.

I want to like this device, but it just doesn’t make sense to me. The Neo actually had me excited. Go figure.
